Royal Adelaide Hospital - Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology Tours

Please join us for a tour of the Radiation Oncology Department at the “new” Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) which opened in 2017.  The RAH hosts South Australia’s public Radiation Oncology service along with our satellite centre at the Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH).  We treat around 2800 patients per year.  Between the two sites we have six Varian TrueBeam linacs (x4 at RAH and x2 at LMH).  We provide the following external beam services:

  • Standard IMRT/VMAT (>90% of patients) & electrons
  • SRS/SRT – provided by our 2 TrueBeam STx models with HD120 MLC – Exactrac Dynamic systems on both these linacs. Identify SGRT on all other TrueBeams
  • Comprehensive SABR program – soon to be rolled out at LMH also
  • Superficial x-ray
  • TBI
  • TSET
  • Paediatric RT

Simulation for our patients is covered by two CT simulators (1 each at RAH & LMH) and in 2026 we plan to install an MR simulator in our MR suite at RAH.  Treatment planning is via RayStation with BrainLab iPlan and Elements for SRS.  We use the ARIA OIS.

We also host an extensive brachytherapy service:

  • HDR gynae, prostate etc. using a Varian Gammamed and BrachyVision/Vitesse/VariSeed
  • Radioiodine service
  • Ophthalmic eye plaques (Ru-106)

SAHMRI: Cyclotron Unit/Jones Radiology

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) is a not-for-profit health and medical research institute. SAHMRI is dedicated to fighting disease and improving health globally. This is achieved through four health themes – Aboriginal Health Equity, Women and Kids,

Precision Cancer Medicine and Lifelong Health.

The Molecular Imaging and Therapy Research Unit (MITRU) established in 2014 within SAHMRI, is a leading South Australian facility dedicated to the research, development, and manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals. MITRU plays a pivotal role in enabling faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving outcomes for South Australian patients.

MITRU operates South Australia’s only cyclotron, used to produce a variety of isotopes for the manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). In addition to in-house isotope production, MITRU has developed and optimised robust procedures for manufacturing therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals using isotopes sourced from external suppliers.

Looking ahead, MITRU plans to expand its pipeline by developing additional radiopharmaceuticals, enabling access to diagnostic and therapeutic innovations not currently available in South Australia.
